Wolfgang

Wolfgang is the second playable Grapheme in Don't Starve that can be unlocked via Experience, with 320 XP, and one of the eleven playable Characters in Don't Starve Together. He is a uncomplicated-minded Strongman who is very exhibitionistic about his might.

When he has a high amount of Hunger, he moves faster, does more than damage, and has more Health than nigh other Characters. On the other hand, he becomes weaker when his Hunger is low. Wolfgang also has a larger maximum Hunger at a value of 300, but information technology will decrease faster or slower depending on how full it is. Wolfgang becomes scared when in the Dark or about Monsters though, and then in those cases he loses Sanity more speedily than normal. His perks give him neat advantages during both melee and ranged combat, hands dispatching even the toughest foes at total Hunger, but leaves him exposed when his stomach is empty.  Overall Wolfgang is a very powerful Character, able to withstand the toughest foes, though his drawbacks can be tough to manage for inexperienced players.

Ham Bat.png Special Power

Wolfgang's special ability is his Mightiness level which increases or decreases depending on the amount of Hunger he has. There are three stages of Mightiness which give Wolfgang different physical appearances and stats:

Regular Grade:
This is Wolfgang'southward starting grade. His advent is that of a slim fit man, visibly having thicker arms than other characters. He starts with 200 Health, and has no bonuses to damage or speed. Wolfgang volition stay in this form if his Hunger is between 100 and 225.

In this form, Wolfgang's Hunger decreases i.5x faster than normal. Different his two other forms the magnitude of these modifiers are non related to his Hunger level.

Wolfgang Growth.png

Mighty Course:
This is Wolfgang's buffed class. It's a temporary physical upgrade that is activated when Wolfgang's Hunger goes to 225 or above. When this form is achieved the superlative of Wolfgang's costume volition exist ripped off, he'll gain numerous arm muscles, and his caput and mustache volition become bigger. When in this state he'll besides become taller.

His maximum Wellness will become from the regular 200 up to 300 depending on Hunger. He will receive a harm bonus betwixt 1.25x and 2x and he will also receive up to a 25% speed boost.

Because of this physical upgrade, Wolfgang'southward Hunger decreases between 1.5x and 3x faster than normal.

The magnitude of all these modifiers will also linearly decrease as Wolfgang'due south Hunger is drained. E.g. at 300 Hunger he will practice 2x more harm, at 299 Hunger he'll do ane.99x and then on.

Wimpy Grade:
Wolfgang's debuff is a concrete downgrade when at 100 hunger or less. His appearance will go a sad and more pathetic-looking version of himself. In this state he'll also become shorter.

His maximum Health goes from 200 down to 150 and his harm will be between 0.75x and 0.5x depending on Hunger.

Wolfgang's movement speed will gradually go down to xc% in this state and his Hunger will decrease between 1.5x and 1x  the normal rate.

The magnitude of these modifiers will linearly subtract in value as Wolfgang becomes more hungry. E.g. at 100 Hunger he will have 200 Health, at 98 Hunger he'll have 199 Wellness and so on.

Disadvantage

Wolfgang will stop and testify an blitheness when changing forms, leaving him vulnerable for a couple of seconds. This can be extremely dangerous when running from enemies. Because he's Nyctophobic (someone greatly afraid of the dark), Wolfgang suffers from 10% greater Sanity drain from Monsters and the dark, then a little more care should be taken with sanity management. The outcome merely extends to those ii cases though, meaning that other things that bleed sanity (eastward.g. Evil Flowers, Dark Sword, Nighttime Light etc.) will drain it at the same rate as they normally do. If the role player has no Sanity recovering Items it is recommended that they sleep through the Night to avoid Sanity drain, since information technology'due south harder to refill than Hunger.

In Don't Starve Together, When riding a Beefalo, Wolfgang has a external speed multiplier equal to the reciprocal of his scale. In some other word, the mightier he is, the slower he is.

Prototype.png Tips

  • A Belt of Hunger volition nullify Wolfgang's Hunger issues. This along with the fact that it provides some Sanity regeneration and extends his Mighty class to concluding virtually 5 minutes and a one-half, makes information technology an excellent particular for this Character.
    • In the Reign of Giants (RoG) DLC players are able to craft a Hibearnation Vest which also provides a Hunger drain reduction admitting not as big as the Belt of Hunger. That said, the Hibearnation Vest provides the highest insulation against cold and more than than twice the Sanity regeneration of the Belt, making it more desirable in Winter fifty-fifty later on the player has secured a Belt of Hunger.
    • The above items are non obtainable in the Shipwrecked (SW) DLC until players observe the Seaworthy and travel to a vanilla/RoG earth. Until and so, players can easily kill and feed on Crabbits and Jellyfishes forth with the hands nerveless Limpets and Seaweed. The abundance of those sources of food makes it possible to go along Wolfgang in his Mighty form while exploring.
  • When the player is lacking Hunger bleed reduction items, it is advised they stay with as low a Hunger level as possible during general gameplay and merely eat to avoid starvation or just before a fight. That mode they'll avoid the big Hunger bleed of the Normal and Mighty forms and be out of danger since the penalties when staying Wimpy are only relevant during a fight.
  • Since Wolfgang's Sanity bleed penalty only applies to the night and Monsters and is and so small, information technology's fairly easy to overcome. Even in a "Light'south Out" world, picking a Blossom a day will even out the Sanity drain with other Characters. When fighting Monsters in Mighty form, Wolfgang will really lose less Sanity than other Characters, due to the fights existence shorter, resulting in less exposure to the insanity aura.
  • Time-lapse of Wellness to Hunger ratio for Wolfgang. From full health, right down to death.

Due to the mode Wolfgang's Wellness scales between forms it'south better to heal when Wimpy and take damage when Mighty, since the healing and harm will be potentially doubled or halved when irresolute form respectively. This makes healing Items upwards to twice as effective with Wolfgang and attacks upwards to half every bit dissentious.
    • This value is increased the more Meat Effigies the role player has, ranking up to only 1/half dozen of the impairment taken with 4 of them active. This happens because the wellness penalty from the effigy is a fixed value instead of a pct of the max health. meaning Mighty Wolfgang has more than than twice the wellness than Wimpy Wolfgang when using Meat Effigies.
  • Despite looking similar a logical nutrient choice for Wolfgang, Meaty Stews are really also unpredictable to be useful. Since none of his forms lasts more than 120 points, the Stew volition never give back 150 points worth of Hunger and it spoils also fast to be stored as an emergency "Get-Mighty" nutrient. This part befalls amend on Bacon and Eggs for its high spoilage time, Dragonpie for being relatively inexpensive and quick to eat, or Meatballs for one of the best Hunger returned per ingredient and the versatility of the recipe.
  • Apart from various traps and Gunpowder, the Weather condition Pain in RoG, Boat Cannon, Coconade, and Obsidian Coconade in SW and the Burn Staff are the only weapons non affected past Wolfgang's damage multipliers, making them effective even when Wolfgang is Wimpy.
  • Due to the way the bonus damage is calculated on the Obsidian Spear, Axe and Machete in SW, they don't do every bit much damage every bit they normally would with Mighty Wolfgang, but on the other paw they won't practice as low equally they would with Wimpy Wolfgang making them still very adept when used with him.

Placeholder.png Trivia

  • Wolfgang was added on October second 2012 when the game was still in Beta. Similar Willow and Wendy earlier him he had no special ability when implemented and the only thing that differed him from Wilson was the lack of a Bristles. It was only on Nov xiii, 2012 that an update added perks for the current playable Characters.
  • In his early concept Wolfgang had a baldheaded head.
  • Wolfgang in-game look before "Strange New Powers" Update

Wolfgang'southward previous perk, earlier the "Foreign New Powers" update, was 75 more Health and Hunger (maximum of 225 each), and a 1.5x damage multiplier, similar to his current Mighty Class. He too looked like his Mighty form all the time, though with an intact costume and less arm muscles.
  • Wolfgang's vox is played by a tuba, which changes in pitch depending on his current form.
  • Later on the "Foreign New Powers" update because of Wolfgang'southward Hunger drain multiplier mechanic timewise it takes him 198 normal Hunger points (exactly 21 min 7 due south or around 2.v in-game days) to get from 300 to 0 Hunger making him slightly less Hunger resistant than a fully upgraded WX-78. Mighty grade lasts only 3 minutes and 56 seconds if not sustained.
  • Thanks to his perk, Wolfgang is the character with both the highest and everyman damage output in the game. When total Mighty he tin exercise 136 damage in melee combat with a Night Sword and 200 damage at range with a Blow Sprint. In the same way when fully starving he can do as low as ii.125 damage when wielding a Issues Internet or Fishing Rod and 13.6 damage with a Boomerang.
    • In RoG, thanks to the Morn Star, Wolfgang tin do equally high as 144 damage to moisture targets. His DPS even surpasses that of the Dragonfly.
      • In SW the impairment dealt is fifty-fifty higher. Thank you to the Trident, Wolfgang can practice as loftier as 204 harm in melee while on Boats and cheers to the Harpoon he can do as high equally 400 damage at range.
  • Despite his moustache, he cannot abound a Bristles, stating his skin is too potent for hair.
  • His Curio Cabinet description from The Forge beta is "Wolfgang is an amiable, musclebound behemothic with a center plagued by a myriad of phobias.".
  • From the poster in the 4th William Carter Puzzle, it can be assumed that Wolfgang worked on a circus every bit a Strongman earlier beingness trapped in the Don't Starve world by Maxwell. This is all speculation though and naught official has been said on the matter.
  • The fact that he has an upcoming "Armed forces" skin and that his Mess Dress (part of his Formal set up) is described as "Formal dinner attire for armed forces officers." suggests that he may have once served in the military, possibly as an officer.
  • When examining Frog Legs, he states that they "Is effeminateness in my state!", suggesting that his nationality could exist French.
  • When examining a Hammer, he states that it "Needs Sickle!", suggesting that he may exist (or has been) Soviet or just Communist.
  • When examining a Pitchfork, he states that it "Reminds me of babyhood," suggesting that he may accept grown upwards in a subcontract.
  • Despite voicing his preference for common cold temperatures when examining the Thermal Measurer, Wolfgang is simply as vulnerable to the cold every bit other characters.
  • Wolfgang has a skull in the game files.
  • Wolfgang was previously unlocked subsequently Wendy.
  • Wolfgang's rather unusual quotes (see his quotes page) may exist a reference to the phrase "brains over brawn," in that he has only the latter.
  • Mighty Wolfgang'south scale is 1.25. That makes him the tallest of the playable Characters while in this grade. His Wimpy grade, on the other hand, has a smaller calibration of 0.9, thus making him the shortest of them.
    • The size of items he's equipping likewise changes with his forms. They're smaller when he'south wimpy and bigger when he's mighty.
  • If the player saves the game while Wolfgang's hunger is between 220-225 or 100-105 points and in the Mighty or Normal form respectively, when they reload Wolfgang will be ane class weaker. That happens because the game considers Normal grade to be between 105 and 225 points and Wimpy form between 0-105 points, even though to get from Mighty to Normal, he needs to be beneath 220 points, and from Normal to Wimpy below 100.
  • Wolfgang is the just grapheme that when struck past Lightning in DLCs is shown to take a normal homo skeleton.
  • When examining the Hibearnation Belong he says "Is like hair on Wolfgang chest.", despite having no visible chest hair neither in-game nor in promotional art.
  • From his test quotes of the Catcoon and ruined Hollow Stump it seems like Wolfgang does not like cats. When examining the Sharkitten he says that he prefers dogs.
  • Wolfgang was added to Don't Starve Together (DST) with the ...In with the New update, making him the first character to be added after the initial closed Beta release of DST.
  • According to Maxwell's quote for Air Unfreshener, Wolfgang has bad odour. When his Wetness rises to a certain point, he volition also say that he doesn't like baths.
  • In Don't Starve Together (DST) his quote for Wendy, Wendy'due south quote for Wolfgang and Wendy'south quote for the Crimson Moonlens heavily imply that Wolfgang is scared of Wendy.

  • While wearing some of the hats while in Normal form, Wolfgang's moustache will disappear when the player moves towards the meridian of the screen.
